Mc Intosh Box & Pallet – History

In 1961, Mr. J. Kenneth McIntosh purchased the Thompson Box Company located on E. First Street in East Syracuse , renaming the business McIntosh Box & Lumber Co.  In 1968, the Company moved to its current Pyle Drive location with the construction of the current “hardwood department” (8,540 square feet).  In 1970, the “softwood department” (11,100 square feet) was added.  Also in 1970, the Company’s name was changed to McIntosh Box & Pallet Co., Inc.

McIntosh has grown steadily over the years.  The Bernhards Bay plant opened in 1971 when the current assembly area (12,000 square feet) was built to enable the automated production of commodity pallets.  Since that time, the plant has been expanded to approximately 35,000 square feet.

  • 1987 ~ the company purchased Dahn Crating Company in Rome to support business opportunities in the Mohawk Valley .
  • 1992 ~ McIntosh purchased a thirty (30) acre parcel and buildings from Rutland Plywood Corp. in Bernhards Bay , adjacent to our original property and opened a fully functional pallet recycling operation.
  • 1992 ~ Mr. McIntosh retired and Tom Ryan purchased the Company.
  • April 1995 ~ fire destroyed the pallet recycling facility in Bernhards Bay
  • December 1995 ~ operations began in the newly constructed recycling building (24,000 square feet) on Route 49 in Bernhards Bay .
  • 2001 ~ Mr. Ryan entered semi-retirement and Rich Huftalen purchased McIntosh.
  • 2005 ~ the company moved its Rome Manufacturing plant to a 30,000 square foot facility on 4 acres at 200 Sixth Street.
  • 2005 ~ the company acquired an 80,000 square foot facility in Buffalo , to support growth in Western NY .

The company has approximately two hundred-twenty (220) employees, 95,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and forty (40) acres at five (5) manufacturing plants.  We currently service customer needs for pallets (both new and recycled), wooden crates and containers, pallet recycling, and disposal.
